Am I Allergic to Lash Extensions? Is my Client Allergic? What Now?

Am I Allergic to Lash Extensions? Is my Client Allergic? What Now?

Is it really an allergy, even though they were fine, every other time?

Yes, it could be - sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Allergies can develop over time!

Sometimes allergies will build over time, completely randomly,

and sometimes there are things either we as lash artists are doing, or that our clients are doing that can increase the risk.

You might be wondering what these are, so you can AVOID them, so here's a short list.

We increase the risk of a client building an allergic reaction when we do any the following:

  • Allow ANY adhesive to touch the clients skin
  • Don’t work within an aerated/ventilated space
  • Use subpar or cheap unregulated adhesives
  • Don’t use a bonder at the end of the sets
  • Don’t do a lash bath after the set on sensitive clients.
  • Are not correctly sanitising and disinfecting between clients.

That's what we're in control of when it comes to lash allergies - but where does the client come in to take some responsibility?

The client can increase the risk of building an allergic reaction when they do the following:

  • Not cleansing - regularly, like every single day, twice a day regularly.
  • Not cleansing with a Lash Extension specific cleanser - they contain antibacterial properties for a reason!
  • Wearing mascara, or other hard to remove makeup that causes long term build up on the lash line.

Another thing to note is:

A client is more likely to experience an allergy when they are in a heightened state of cortisol, which increases the body's histamine.

Think: stressful life events.

So, you think your clients developed an allergy? What's next?

Cyanoacrylate is found in nearly ALL lash adhesives, and it has been named the MAIN* allergen in lash adhesive and it is what MOST (not all) people become allergic too.

For the longest time, there was no alternative to a cyanoacrylate adhesive, and even once there was, the quality was poor, and the retention was poorer.

Thankfully, things have changed!

We have created a Cyano-Free adhesive that is JUST as good as its cyanoacrylate counterparts.

It’s easy to use, and it’s retention matches that of our cyanoacrylate based adhesives!

We have HOPE for clients who are allergic to lash adhesive!

We want to be CLEAR

All lash adhesives to this day still contain ACRYLATES - this is simply what makes them 'stick'

And it appears this has caused confusion, even amongst the highest regarded educators.

Yes, some people are UNFORTUNATELY allergic to all forms of acrylate -

but not all of them.

This is why we recommend performing a patch test on your clients with a cyano-free adhesive, who have experienced allergies in the past, to rule out whether its ACRYLATES as a whole, or JUST cyanoacrylate.

We love to help, and not everything that appears to be an allergic reaction, is one, so we would love you to have our free allergy checklist download,
